Afterburner

Military jet engines, in particular for supersonic combat aircraft, are fitted with an afterburner downstream of the turbine. It serves to nearly double the thrust for take-off, ascent or supersonic flight. In the afterburner the residual oxygen in the exhaust gas is mixed with an extra dose of fuel and burned.
