ATFI

The abbreviation ATFI stands for Advance Technology Fan Integrator, a revolutionary propulsion concept for future aircraft which features a reduction gearbox between the low-pressure turbine and the fan.

This concept allows both components to be operated at their respective physical optimum: whereas the turbine should rotate at as high speeds as possible the fan speed must be distinctly lower. In addition, the ATFI concept reduces the parts count and - as a result - also the cost of manufacture and maintenance.
