Ceramics

Ceramic materials will be used instead of metals for certain components of aero engines. Combustion chambers and turbine blades and vanes are exposed to gas temperatures which are higher than the melting points of the materials used and, therefore, require complex cooling air systems which reduce the efficiency of the engine. For such components, ceramic materials appear to be a suitable alternative as they are capable of withstanding very high temperatures without the need for cooling.
