Turbine blades solidified by this process are characterized by a uni-directional grain structure. This orientation of the columnar crystals significantly improves the high-temperature strength in longitudinal direction. As compared with conventionally cast blades the service life of directionally solidified blades is several times higher, identical mechanical and thermal loads assumed.
