Fan

Modern airliners are powered by turbofan engines where the air ingested is split up into two airstreams. A relatively small portion is routed through the core engine (compressor, combustion chamber, turbine) whereas the major portion, the so-called bypass flow, passes around the engine and serves cooling purposes. The extremely large first rotor of the engine that accelerates this bypass flow is called fan (or blower).
