Magnetic particle inspection (electromagnetic method)

This crack inspection method serves to detect anomalies - predominantly discontinuities - in the surface or at a very small depth below the surface. Only magnetic materials can be inspected by this method. In the process the component is magnetized and flushed with an inspection medium consisting of a fluorescent magnetic powder and a carrier oil. Cracks (or discontinuities) in the surface cause a magnetic scatter field to form which attracts the magnetic particles. Accumulations of these particles in the area of cracks are then rendered visible under UV light.
