Scanning electron microscopy

Serves to examine surfaces and to determine physical-chemical material properties. To obtain an SEM image the surface of a solid body is scanned by a focused electron beam in a pattern that resembles that of a cathode ray tube. The electron beam is passed along a surface, returned to its starting point and indexed by a certain standard increment. This process is repeated until the entire surface has been covered. The signals obtained are then used to investigate the surface.
