Commercial OEM and Spare-parts Business

As part of its commercial activities, MTU Aero Engines designs, develops and manufactures engine modules and components. Its technological expertise in the field of low-pressure turbines and high-pressure compressors have made MTU a leading manufacturer of subsystems and components in the global engine business. Other players in this market, which is characterized by high market-entry barriers, are the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and the component suppliers.

With its products, MTU has content on engines in all thrust and power categories, from powerplants for small business jets to the world's most powerful jetliners. The engine programs that currently yield the highest sales and account for approximately two thirds of the commercial OEM business revenues are the V2500, which powers the Airbus A320 family of aircraft, the PW2000, and the CF6-80 for medium- and long-haul airliners.

The company is a risk-and-revenue-sharing partner in the major commercial engine programs. Under the partnership arrangements, MTU assumes full development and production responsibility for the components and modules forming part of its work share. Typically, the program work share amounts to 10 to 15%, depending on the valuation of the module. MTU shares pro-rata in the revenues, in accordance with its work share. Its cooperation partners are the world's big-league players in the engine industry - Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, and Rolls-Royce.

To gird for the future, MTU has taken stakes in a number of significant engine programs and is well positioned in the marketplace. Among these future programs are the GP7000 for the Airbus A380 mega-liner and the GEnx engine to power the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Boeing 747-8 long-range wide-body airliner. The advanced geared turbofan technology is applied in Pratt & Whitney's "PurePower" family of engines, which include the powerplants for the future Bombardier CSeries and Mitsubishi Regional Jet. The ultimate market breakthrough for the geared turbofan technology came in 2010 with the decision by Airbus to offer the PW1100G as one of the two new engine options for the A320neo, the re-engined version of the successful A320 family. Market launch of the A320neo is scheduled for 2016.
