MTU Aero Engines to benefit from Trans States order for the geared turbofan to power regional jets

U.S. airline to equip 100 MRJ aircraft with PurePower® PW1200G engines

Munich, February 2, 2011 – The geared turbofan (GTF) has scored another success: U.S. airline holding company Trans States Holdings has placed an order with Pratt & Whitney for 100 PW1200G engines to power 50 Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) airliners it has on firm order, plus another 100 of the propulsion system for 50 MRJ aircraft it has on option. MTU, which holds a 15-percent share in the GTF program, will benefit from the deal."At list price, the contract translates into total sales of about 150 million euros for us," according to MTU CEO Egon Behle. Deliveries of the aircraft are slated to begin in 2014.

The PW1200G geared turbofan has been selected as the exclusive powerplant for Mitsubishi's new regional jet. The engine offers a number of advantages: It delivers double-digit reductions in fuel burn and CO2 emissions and, compared with today's engines, is up to 50 percent quieter and much more cost efficient to operate. MTU contributes the high-speed low-pressure turbine – a key component – and half of the technologically advanced high-pressure compressor to this Pratt & Whitney engine. To date, the Pure-Power PW1000G geared-turbofan family has won orders for more than 600 engines, if all options are exercised.
