08.12.2011 | MTU Aero Engines and Sagem (Safran group) intend to form joint venture for safety-critical software and hardware development

MTU Aero Engines and Sagem have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to form a joint venture in the field of the development of safety-critical software and hardware for military and civil aviation applications. Located at the MTU campus in Munich, Germany, the new company is planned to start its operations in 2012. The 50/50 joint venture will gather some 200 engineers, mainly from the current MTU organization. Main products will include safety-critical engine controls for programs such as TP400-D6 for the A400M military transport aircraft, as well as further safety-critical hardware and software solutions such as controls for landing gear, braking, monitoring or information systems.

17.11.2011 | Dubai Air Show a success: MTU picks up orders for more than 240 engines

MTU Aero Engines has wrapped up a successful appearance at this year's Dubai Airshow and announced the receipt of a number of orders on the final day of the event. "The value of the deals concluded amounts to some 400 million euros in business for us. These new contract wins are again impressive proof that the geared turbofan is successfully establishing itself in the market as the propulsion concept of the future," comments MTU CEO Egon Behle.

26.10.2011 | MTU Aero Engines improves operating result and confirms 2011 year-end forecast

MTU Aero Engines Holding AG increased its revenues in the first nine months of 2011 by 4 % to € 2,067.3 million (1-9/2010: € 1,992.3 million). The company's operating profit rose by 8 % to € 244.3 million (1-9/2010: € 226.1 million), while net income improved by 9 % to € 134.6 million (1-9/2010: € 124.0 million). The EBIT margin thus rose to 11.8 % compared with 11.3 % in 1-9/2010. “We are expecting a strong fourth quarter, both for series-production and spare-parts business, and also anticipate a positive trend in the commercial MRO business,” explained Egon Behle, CEO of MTU Aero Engines Holding AG. “These developments, along with the results of the first nine months, lead us to confirm our forecasts for the financial year. I am confident that we will achieve the targets we set ourselves for 2011.”

13.10.2011 | MTU Aero Engines intends to increase its share in International Aero Engines (IAE)

MTU Aero Engines intends to increase its share in the International Aero Engines (IAE) consortium. This move is expected to follow an agreement between Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce on the restructuring of the IAE consortium, which markets the highly successful V2500 engines for Airbus A320 family aircraft. Rolls-Royce will sell its stake in IAE to Pratt & Whitney, which in turn will pass on parts of this share to MTU Aero Engines.

28.09.2011 | MTU Aero Engines takes 18-percent share in the PurePower® PW1100G-JM engine program

MTU Aero Engines has taken an 18-percent share in the PurePower PW1100G-JM engine program which is currently being developed for the emerging Airbus A320neo aircraft family. This has been agreed between MTU, JAEC and Pratt & Whitney, the leading OEM partner company in this program. According to the agreement, MTU will also take on a portion of the final engine assembly and test of the PW1100G - a new role for MTU in a high-volume commercial engine program. "We are very proud to have succeeded in increasing our program share and taking on a major role in engine assembly. 12.09.2011 | MTU Maintenance succeeds in entering the GE90 MRO market

MTU Maintenance Hannover has succeeded in winning its first GE90 maintenance customers: Air New Zealand, Southern Air and V Australia will have their GE90-110Bs and -115Bs supported by MTU. The engines are powering the Boeing 777s operated by these airlines. The contracts have a combined value of approximately 550 million U.S. dollars. "This breakthrough marks our entry into an important market for our future," commented Dr. Stefan Weingartner, MTU President Commercial Maintenance."I'm sure work on the world's most powerful commercial jet engine will contribute significantly to the efficient utilization of shop capacities at our Hanover location." MTU Maintenance has obtained the MRO license for the new engine type last year and is optimally prepared for this propulsion system.

01.08.2011 | MTU lifts EBIT forecast to € 325 million

In the first half of 2011, MTU Aero Engines Holding AG boosted its operating profit by 14% to € 164.0 million (1-6/2010: € 144.1 million). “That's the best half-year result in the history of MTU,” said Egon Behle, CEO of MTU Aero Engines Holding AG, “and it is reason for us to revise our full-year forecast upward. We are now expecting to achieve an EBIT adjusted figure of € 325 million in 2011.” MTU had previously assumed an EBIT adjusted comparable to the previous year's (2010: € 311.3 million). MTU's EBIT margin rose to 12.2 % in the first six months of 2011, compared with 10.7 % in the same period in 2010. Revenues reached € 1,346.5 million (1-6/2010: € 1,348.8 million), while the company succeeded in boosting its earnings after tax by 22 % to € 89.1 million (1-6/2010: € 73.3 million).

For Germany's leading engine manufacturer, the air show in France's Le Bourget was a huge success: MTU CEO Egon Behle reported that the company had bagged orders in the total amount of more than 600 million euros. "That's a figure that is twice as high as at the last Paris Air Show two years ago," explained Behle.

03.05.2011 | MTU Aero Engines shows strong operating performance in the first quarter

MTU Aero Engines Holding AG improved its revenues in the first quarter 2011 by 4 % to € 664.8 million (1-3/2010: € 640.2 million). The company's operating profit rose by 17 % to € 80.5 million, compared with € 68.8 million in the same quarter of the previous year. This brought the operating margin up to 12.1 % compared with 10.7 % in the first three months of 2010. At € 40.4 million, net income remained stable (1-3/2010: € 40.1 million).

12.04.2011 | MTU Maintenance: Contracts worth some 400 million euros in the first quarter

MTU's Maintenance group did extremely well in the first quarter: In the first three months of this year, new contracts worth around 400 million euros were signed. One of the largest was awarded by Atlas Air. The U.S. carrier had started to send the CF6-50 and CF6-80 engines powering its Boeing 747 fleet to MTU Maintenance Hannover for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) back in 1999. Now the existing contract was expanded to include additional engines and renewed to run through 2020. MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg's CF34 MRO team, too, succeeded in securing some attractive deals.

05.04.2011 | MTU to profit: Lufthansa picks geared turbofan engine for A320neo

More good news for the geared turbofan (GTF): Lufthansa, too, is betting on the new propulsion technology. The German flag carrier has selected the PW1100G engine to equip the 30 A320neo aircraft it has on firm order. MTU Aero Engines will benefit significantly from the contract, which is for 60 propulsion systems. The company has roughly a 15-percent workshare in Pratt & Whitney's geared turbofan engine and expects revenues in the region of 60 million euros from the deal.

01.04.2011 | PW1100G: MTU Aero Engines to share in a mega contract from India

MTU Aero Engines benefits from one of the largest orders placed in recent aviation history. Indian airline IndiGo has selected Pratt & Whitney's PurePower PW1100G to equip 150 A320neo aircraft it has on firm order. The deal is for 300 of the propulsion systems, plus options on additional engines. MTU Aero Engines expects the deal to be worth about 300 million euros; the company has a stake of about 15 percent in the geared turbofan (GTF) engine.

09.03.2011 | Breakthrough for the PW1100G: MTU Aero Engines to benefit from major ILFC order

The PW1100G geared turbofan engine has scored a breakthrough: U.S. International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) has placed firm orders and options for 100 A320neo family aircraft. All of the twinjets will be equipped with Pratt & Whitney's PW1100G, which incorporates entirely new engine technology. MTU already has a stake of around 15 percent in the geared turbofan (GTF); the precise details of its program share in the version to power the A320neo are currently being negotiated. Deliveries of the aircraft are slated to begin in 2016.

23.02.2011 | MTU Aero Engines exceeds its earnings targets for 2010

MTU Aero Engines exceeded its earnings forecast for the financial year 2010. Operating profit increased by 7 % from € 292.3 million in 2009 to € 311.3 million, which is higher than the earnings forecast of € 310 million that had been revised upward in the course of the year. MTU also improved its return on sales by 0.3 percentage points to 11.5 %, once again demonstrating the company's high level of profitability. MTU's net income of € 142.2 million was not only higher than the previous year's figure of € 141.0 million, but also above the company's declared target of € 140 million. Revenues grew by 4 % to € 2.71 billion (2009: € 2.61 billion), just under the forecast figure of € 2.75 billion. MTU also significantly exceeded its free cash flow target, which had also been revised upward during the year. At the end of 2010, free cash flow amounted to € 144.8 million (2009: € 120.2 million), 21 % more than the forecast of € 120 million.

02.02.2011 | MTU Aero Engines to benefit from Trans States order for the geared turbofan to power regional jets

The geared turbofan (GTF) has scored another success: U.S. airline holding company Trans States Holdings has placed an order with Pratt & Whitney for 100 PW1200G engines to power 50 Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) airliners it has on firm order, plus another 100 of the propulsion system for 50 MRJ aircraft it has on option. MTU, which holds a 15-percent share in the GTF program, will benefit from the deal. "At list price, the contract translates into total sales of about 150 million euros for us," according to MTU CEO Egon Behle. Deliveries of the aircraft are slated to begin in 2014.
