MTU – Germany’s leading manufacturer in the engine industry
- Collaboration on new propulsion systems
In the aviation industry, three simple letters stand for top-notch engine technology: MTU. With a workforce of more than 8,200 people Germany's leading engine manufacturer, the country's only independent engine builder, has been providing propulsion systems to power aircraft for more than 75 years now, having become an established global player. The company engages in the development, manufacture, marketing and support of commercial and military aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines. In fiscal 2011, it had around 2.9 billion euros in sales.
MTU Maintenance – Global player in commercial engine MRO
MTU Aero Engines is Germany's leading engine manufacturer and the country’s only independent engine builder. It’s an established player in the industry worldwide and designs, develops, manufactures, markets and supports commercial and military aircraft and industrial gas turbines. The company is the world's largest independent provider of commercial engine maintenance services. A primary part of its business is repairing engines for programs in which it is a risk and revenue sharing partner. MTU's high-tech repair approaches are globally unique, mostly patented and known under the trademark MTUPlus Repairs. These activities are combined under the roof of the MTU Maintenance group. It operates facilities in Hannover, Berlin-Brandenburg (both Germany), Rzeszów (Poland), Vancouver (Canada), Dallas (U.S), Zhuhai (China), Ayutthaya (Thailand) and close to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
MTU Aero Engines - Military propulsion system experts
- Industrial lead company for engines flown by the German Armed Forces
- International business driven by exports and a local presence
MTU Aero Engines is Germany's leading engine manufacturer and a global player in the industry. It develops, manufactures, markets and supports commercial and military aircraft engines. Its product mix of complementary modules spans the entire engine, giving the company full engine competence. In the military arena, the company is the German Armed Forces' major industrial partner for practically all engine types flown by them. MTU provides a full range of services, from maturing enabling technologies through developing and manufacturing engines and engine components, to providing maintenance and comprehensive customer support services. Among the company's current major military engine programs are the TP400-D6 engine to power the A400M military transport, the EJ200 for the Eurofighter, the RB199 for the Tornado and the MTR390 for the French-German Tiger attack-escort helicopter. The company has also stakes in four military engines built by General Electric, the F404, F414, F110 and GE38.
MTU focuses on tomorrow's engine: reducing fuel burn and emissions
MTU Aero Engines has for years been working on new technologies to further improve the environmental compatibility of future engines. The effort is worth the trouble: industry experts see good growth opportunities for aviation, the annual growth rate being projected at five percent on average. Closely cooperating with the major players in the business, Germany's leading engine manufacturer develops novel propulsion systems and technologies in all thrust and power categories and is involved in essential national and international research projects.
MTU Aero Engines: World-class repair techniques
While other repair people, when faced with a defective part, may be quick to reach for replacement parts, MTU's maintenance experts hesitate; they'd rather repair. Owing to its innovative processes and decades of experience, the world's largest independent provider of commercial engine maintenance services succeeds in repairing also heavily worn parts, components and accessories at an affordable price. MTU's high-tech repair approaches are globally unique, mostly patented and known under the trademark MTUPlus Repairs. "They go easy on our customers' pocketbooks and spare natural resources," explains Dr. Stefan Weingartner, MTU Aero Engines President Commercial Maintenance.
MTU Aero Engines: Engine manufacturing at its best
Compressors and turbines made by MTU are among the finest to be found in the marketplace. Another field in which the company, which has been providing propulsion systems to power aircraft for decades, has become a world leader is manufacturing techniques. "Our technological capabilities are top-notch," says Richard Maier, Senior Vice President, Production Development and Support at MTU Aero Engines in Munich. In some manufacturing technology areas, MTU is the undisputed Number One in the world.
Geared turbofan – Pratt & Whitney and MTU are building the engine of the future
- MTU contributes the high-speed low-pressure turbine
- Reductions in fuel burn and CO2 emission, potential for further optimizations
- Airbus offers geared turbofan as an engine option for the A320neo
Aircraft engines of the future will have to be quieter, more fuel-efficient and cleaner than the engines in service today. Pratt & Whitney and MTU Aero Engines are collaborating on the PurePower® PW1000G geared turbofan (GTF) engine to develop a game-changing propulsion concept and are planning to build a complete family of engines based on this concept. The new technology holds the promise of reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 15 percent each, and of cutting present perceived noise levels in half.
