Cooperation with the German Air Force
In partnership with the German Air Force, MTU Aero Engines has developed and implemented an industry-military cooperative concept of engine maintenance. The new maintenance concept has found its first use on the Eurofighter's EJ200 engine.
In contrast to conventional maintenance practice, the cooperation co-locates the maintenance activities under an engine program at a single location where, MTU experts, military personnel and civilian German Air Force employees work shoulder to shoulder. The military personnel is involved in the industrial repair process, honing their engine skills. Thus, the German Air Force makes sure it does not lose any of its maintenance and system know-how. Industrially, the cooperation is lead by MTU, but the military personnel remains fully under German Air Force command.
In November 2005, an expanded contract was inked. It additionally includes the Tornado's RB199 engine, the Phantom's J79 engine and the RR250-C20 engine for the antitank and support helicopter PAH1.
