Linear friction welding

In engine construction, linear friction welding has in the past several years taken on additional significance. This is mainly because it is used in blisk (bladed disk) production.

Operating principle of linear friction welding

In the linear friction welding process, one of the parts to be joined together is firmly clamped in place while the other is made to oscillate in a linear motion. When the parts are pressed together, frictional heat results and the material in the weld zone is heated to forging temperature. Simultaneously, the parts are upset, which causes a weld bead to form in the joint region. This bead is subsequently removed by adaptive milling.
