Electron-beam vapor deposition facility

EB-PVD (Electron-Beam Physical Vapor Deposition)

To better protect high-pressure turbine blades against the searing heat inside the engine, they are coated with a ceramic material. For the purpose, Ceramic Coating Center (CCC) uses an advanced technique, EB-PVD (Electron-Beam Physical Vapor Deposition).

CCC is a 50-50 joint venture of MTU Aero Engines and Snecma Services in Châtellerault, France. In the process, a ceramic material is molten and vaporized in a vacuum using two electron beams. The resulting condensate precipitates onto the blade surface, forming a protective surface film that owing to its columnar structure is highly resistant to thermal stress fluctuations.
