MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg lays foundation stone for new logistics center

• The total investment for the new building is 11.5 million euros
• Continuous growth of the location calls for extension by 6,500 square meters

Ludwigsfelde, July 20, 2018 - MTU Maintenance, one of the world’s leading provider of MRO services for commercial aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines, has laid the foundation stone for a new logistics center at its Ludwigsfelde location today. The total investment for the new building with a workspace of 6,500 square meters is 11.5 million euros. The additional floor space is needed to cater to the location’s continued growth. Between 2016 and 2018, the number of operating hours has risen 30 percent and is expected to increase further in the two-digit percentage range in the years to come, the reasons being higher workloads and the addition of new engine models to the company’s portfolio. Plans are to have the logistics center up and running in June 2019.

“The construction of the new logistics center marks another important milestone in the development of our company,” said André Sinanian, Managing Director & Senior Vice President of MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg. “The new building is a symbol of the success our location has seen so far. At the same time, this construction project affirms our commitment to continue to cater to the needs of our customers worldwide in an optimum and flexible manner – true to our company vision ‘Excellence made in Brandenburg’.”

The move to expand the Ludwigsfelde facility comes in response to the significant growth the location has seen over the years in terms of number of staff, business volumes and engine models supported. In 2017, MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg hired 112 new employees and in 2018 already as many as 96. In all, the location currently employs a workforce of 801 people. Revenues increased 18 percent in 2017, as compared with the year before. In 2018, MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg set up a mobile repair team for the PW800 engine, built up repair capabilities for the low-pressure turbine and added PW1100G-JM parts repairs to its portfolio of services.

In his address at the foundation-laying ceremony, Hendrik Fischer, State Secretary at the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal State of Brandenburg, said: “The Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region ranks among the top 3 aerospace industry clusters in Ger-many, and MTU in Ludwigsfelde has been playing a key role in this success story. The company’s current investment is another clear signal of its commitment to the region as a place to do business. Today, MTU not only lays the foundation stone for the new logistics shop, the company also paves the way for continued growth. This will have a positive impact also on the further development of Brandenburg as an aerospace industry location.”

With a length of 100 meters, a width of 50 meters and a height of up to 16 meters, the new logistics center across two storeys will be the largest building at the company’s premises. It will come equipped with the most advanced high-rack storage technology. The logistics center pulls all functions involved in a modern supply chain together under one roof: operational logistics, purchasing, material requirements planning, material management, logistics planning, customs and foreign trade. This will allow the logistics processes within the company to be made more efficient. In the future, around 105 employees will be working in the new logistics center. And there is enough capacity for additional workplaces to allow for future growth.
