Autoclave cleaning of blades

MTU has developed Autoclave cleaning, since absolutely clean blades are an important prerequisite for efficient engine operation. During flight operations, however, airborne particles like sand or dust and fuel residues are deposited in the internal cooling system of high-pressure turbine blades, which adversely affect blade cooling and may plug cooling air holes.

During blade repair at MTU Maintenance, therefore, particular attention is paid to cleaning of the cooling air system and removal of deposits. MTU uses a process in which an alkaline cleaner is forced through the blade interior at a high pressure to remove contamination deposits and open up plugged cooling air holes. Even heavily contaminated turbine blades removed from engines operated in desert regions can be reliably cleaned with this process.
