Fluoride ion cleaning

MTU uses fluoride ion cleaning, or FIC for short, to clean vanes prior to brazing, sincethe quality of brazed joints on high-pressure and low-pressure turbine vanes depends directly on the degree of cleanliness of the components processed. In particular, special cleaning processes are required for contamination and oxides in the area of cracks to be repaired by brazing.

Cleaning components by conventional vacuum annealing frequently does not result in complete removal of contamination and oxides. FIC allows the hydrogen fluorides forming in the process to penetrate even the narrowest of cracks and breaks down contamination and oxides through chemical action. Combined with a smart process control, this cleaning technique ensures excellent and reproducible cleaning results and therefore high-quality brazed joints.
