Platinum aluminide coating

Platinum aluminide (PtAl) coatings are highly efficient coatings for engine components. They provide protection against oxidation and the effects of combustion temperatures as high as 900 to approx. 1,100 degrees Celsius. PtAl coatings protect high-pressure turbine blades and vanes against burns and material loss for up to 10,000 operating hours.

The highly heat-resistant coatings are produced using a three-step process: electro-deposition of platinum, diffusion heat treatment and thermochemical aluminide coating. The protective effect can further be enhanced by an additional ceramic coating applied by physical vapor deposition. MTU has developed proprietary techniques and uses these high-tech coatings both in the new parts production and in the repair areas.
