ENOVAL

MTU’s most recent European technology program is ENOVAL (ENgine module VALidators). Funded under the EU’s 7th Framework Program, the MTU-led project will run for four years. 35 European partners from industry, research and academe are developing new low-pressure spool technologies for medium-sized, large and very large turbofans, the aim being to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to five percent and a reduction in noise of up to 1.3 dB  through higher bypass ratios of between 12:1 and 20:1 and a higher overall pressure ratio of between 50:1 and 70:1. Compare this with today’s engines, which have ratios of up to 12:1 and up to 50:1, respectively. MTU is focusing on the integration and optimization of the expansion system, which consists of the inter-turbine case, low-pressure turbine and turbine exit case.
