CF6: Powering widebody aircraft
The CF6, a two-shaft turbofan engine from GE Aerospace, is designed for medium- and long-haul widebody aircraft produced by Airbus and Boeing.
MTU’s involvement in the CF6
MTU has been a key risk- and revenue-sharing partner in the development and production of the CF6 since 1971. Starting with the CF6-50 engines, the company’s involvement has expanded over the years to encompass the entire CF6 family, which includes the CF6-6, CF6-80A, CF6-80C2, and CF6-80E models. This engine, one of the best-selling in its class, marked MTU’s entry into the commercial aviation market more than 50 years ago. MTU is responsible for manufacturing essential components such as sections of the turbine and compressor—over a million parts have been produced for these components to date.
This engine family has been in production for over 40 years, so the maintenance and spare parts business for it is becoming more important all the time. The CF6-80C2 is maintained at MTU Maintenance Hannover and MTU Maintenance Canada.
