Military Engine Business
In the military arena, MTU Aero Engines has for decades been the Bundeswehr's major industrial partner for practically all aircraft engines flown by it. In its lead contractor role, MTU matures enabling technologies, and designs, develops and manufactures engine modules and components. In addition, the company manufactures spare parts and assumes responsibility for engine final assembly. Other main areas of activity are engine maintenance and the training of soldiers and civil employees of the armed forces. MTU counts the air forces of various nations among its military customers.
On a European scale, MTU is the German partner in all major military programs. Cases in point are the EJ200 for the Eurofighter/Typhoon, the RB199 for the Tornado, the TP400 for the A400M military transporter, and the MTR390 for the European combat helicopter Tiger.
In the U.S. military market, the largest in the world, MTU has stakes in the U.S. engine programs F414, F404, and the T408 engine to power the heavy-lift helicopter.
