Sustainable business: MTU Aero Engines publishes fourth Sustainability Report
Munich, July 29, 2016 – As an innovative company with a rich history, MTU Aero Engines AG has set itself the goal of creating long-term value for its stakeholders. The development of aircraft engines that reduce fuel consumption, emissions such as CO2, and noise impact are top of the company’s agenda. The new geared turbofan engine, which represents the core of MTU’s Clean Air Engine agenda, is an excellent example of the company’s strong commitment to product responsibility. Through its Clean Air Engine agenda, MTU is responding to pressing global challenges such as climate change, mobility needs and scarcity of resources. The company plans to reduce the noise levels by 65 percent and to cut CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2050. MTU’s fourth Sustainability Report, issued for the year 2015, reports according to both the UN Global Compact and Global Reporting Initiative (G4) standards and covers the activities of all MTU company locations in Europe.
“Our sustainability strategy is based on a long-term approach to value creation that is linked to the sustainable development of MTU. Environmental and societal responsibility are an integral part of our business operations,” explains Reiner Winkler, MTU Aero Engines AG’s Chief Executive Officer. “As a company, we always look ahead and want to continually develop. With this in mind, we have committed ourselves to sustainability and made it a corporate goal for the 2016 financial year.”
But for MTU, sustainability goes much further. The company has integrated mandatory social and environmental standards along the value chain, in manufacturing facilities at its locations, and in its work with suppliers around the world. Additionally, a range of measures has been launched to limit the company’s energy and raw material requirements as well as to reduce emissions. The aim being manufacturing processes that are considerate of resources and environmentally-friendly. In November 2015, the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Pro-ject) named MTU “Germany’s Best Improver”—recognition of the fact that the company has increased transparency regarding its environmental impact. Moreover, the company has committed itself to the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact; relating to human rights, fair labor standards, environmental protection and the fight against corruption. MTU’s CEO Winkler summarizes: “We will continue to take responsibility, in order to be sustainable in all aspects of our business and working life.”
