PW500

MTU has been cooperating with Pratt & Whitney Canada since 1993 on the PW500 engine family for medium-size business jets. MTU has a stake of 25 percent in this program.

Engines of the PW500 family are two-shaft turbofans. MTU’s contribution includes the development and manufacture of the complete low-pressure turbine including the exit casing and the mixer for the PW530 and PW545 models.

Facts

  • EIS: 1997
  • Two-shaft turbofan engine with a thrust category of 3,000-4,500 lbf
  • Single-stage fan with integral blades
  • Three-stage high-pressure compressor with two axial stages (blisks) and one radial stage
  • Reverse-flow annular combustion chamber
  • Single-stage high-pressure turbine with cooled vanes
  • Bypass casing over the full engine length
  • Mixing of cold and hot gas streams in the mixer
  • Booster stage in the low-pressure compressor and three-stage low-pressure turbine (PW545)
  • Three-stage low-pressure turbine (PW545)
  • Digital engine control (EEC) with hydromechanical backup (PW545)

How does a turbofan engine work?

Air is ingested, compressed, combusted and then expelled. Sounds simple, but it’s actually highly complex: modern aircraft engines are high-performance machines that must withstand extreme conditions.
