PW500: Powering midsize business jets

The PW500 engines are two-shaft turbofan engines developed specifically to power midsize business jets. MTU collaborates with Pratt & Whitney Canada on the PW500.

MTU’s involvement in the PW500

MTU Aero Engines has had a program share of 25 percent in the development and manufacture of this engine family since 1993. MTU’s involvement covers the PW530 and PW545 models. The company focuses on developing and manufacturing the entire low-pressure turbine including exit case and mixer.

Facts

  • EIS: 1997
  • The PW500 is a two-shaft turbofan engine with a thrust category of 3,000-4,500 lbf

How does a turbofan engine work?

Air is ingested, compressed, combusted and then expelled. Sounds simple, but it’s actually highly complex: modern aircraft engines are high-performance machines that must withstand extreme conditions.
