Paving the way for emissions-free sites

No distance is too far for MTU to drive forward climate action in production: we drilled down over 2,100 meters at our Munich headquarters to be able to use geothermal energy as a sustainable energy source. We want to reduce our carbon footprint by 63 percent 2035 relative to 2024. Our climate strategy shows how we mean to achieve this—by reducing consumption, expanding our own renewable power generation, and making increased use of green energy.

Green energy from the depths

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. What did we gain? Heat from the depths. At our Munich site, we have become the first industrial company in Germany to tap deep geothermal energy for our heat supply. Test drilling and other testing work has now been successfully concluded, and construction of the heat distribution center is progressing. Starting in summer 2025, sustainable energy from geothermal strata will gradually replace our gas heating almost entirely. This project sees us venturing into unknown depths for an aviation company—but challenges are what drive us forward.
