LuFo strengthens innovative power

The German government's aviation research program Luftfahrtforschungsprogamm (LuFo) specifically promotes the development of forward-looking technologies, thereby accelerating the transfer of basic research into marketable, climate-friendly aviation propulsion systems. LuFo thus strengthens our technological leadership.

MTU has been shaping civil aviation for decades with its evolutionary and revolutionary cutting-edge technologies. LuFo enables us to continue setting standards in efficiency, sustainability, and performance. That was, is, and remains our goal.

KlimaRAT

In the joint project KlimaRAT research is being conducted into how climate-impacting contrails are formed and which factors influence this non-CO₂ effect. To this end, tests are being carried out on an altitude test bench. The findings will enable future aircraft propulsion systems to be designed in such a way that their climate impact is significantly reduced. Another goal is to noticeably shorten the development and introduction times for new engine concepts.

BUZZKATZ

BUZZKATZ is researching technologies and methods for further reducing aircraft noise at the installed aircraft engine in order to increase the acceptance of the next generation of climate-friendly aircraft through further noise reduction. The noise reduction measures planned in BUZZKATZ at the source, combined with a reduction in carbon dioxide and water vapor emissions, address the conflict between economic growth and aircraft noise in a cost-effective manner.

SONRISA

The joint project SONRISA is developing a digitized and standardizable quality assurance framework for the laser powder bed fusion process (PBF-LB/M) in aviation. The aim is to reliably demonstrate the stability and repeatability of additive manufacturing processes, thereby significantly increasing the acceptance of AM components. The focus is on in-situ process monitoring, statistical process control, and a robust data processing infrastructure. The aim is to reduce testing costs and accelerate approval processes, as well as to develop new, cost-efficient NDI zone concepts that enable targeted and less resource-intensive component testing.
